On October 8, HBO’s new documentary Electric Money: The Mystery of Bitcoin by Cullen Hoback aired. It suggests that Peter Todd, a 39-year-old software developer, may be Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin.

However, the evidence in the documentary is largely circumstantial, focusing on Todd’s early involvement in Bitcoin and his connections to other key figures, such as cryptographer Adam Back.

Among the key pieces of evidence is a 2010 forum post in which Todd appears to echo Nakamoto’s thoughts, and a chat transcript in which Todd discusses “sacrifice” Bitcoin.

The filmmaker interprets this as a possible reference to Satoshi’s untapped BTC supply, which amounts to more than a million coins, worth about $65 billion.

Todd: I'm Not Satoshi

Todd is not very well known in crypto circles, but he has a strong social media presence, where he has 167,000 followers.

According to a CNN interview with the documentary's director, Cullen Hoback, Peter Todd has openly denied being Satoshi Nakamoto, calling the film "irresponsible" and saying it puts his life in danger.

Todd said HBO had not contacted him prior to the film's release or offered him the opportunity to screen it, but Hoback remains confident in his conclusion despite his denial.

"Cullen is grasping at straws," Todd told CNN , before adding, "He's playing up a few coincidences into something much bigger. It's ironic, really: that's the hallmark of conspiracy thinking."

Todd, 39, is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. He was 23 when he completed the Bitcoin white paper.

He claims he started hanging out with key crypto influencers and cypherpunks when he was about 15.

Castle Island Ventures partner Nick Carter, who has known Todd since 2017, said, “He’s one of the most important Bitcoiners from a technical perspective,” but doesn’t believe he’s Satoshi.

Bitcoin markets have been muted by the film’s release, with the asset also trading in its limited range.
