October is shaping up to be a big month for token unlocks as several major altcoin projects release millions of coins into their ecosystems. Vesting schedules are common practice for newly created cryptocurrencies as they can help prevent a massive supply shock when a project’s token is airdropped.
TIA, the native token of modular blockchain project Celestia, is gearing up for a major change to its current tokenomics. 175.75 million TIA, currently valued at around $1.1 billion, will be given to the Celestia community following the project’s initial airdrop last October. The token unlock will happen exactly one year from now on Halloween, and will likely benefit core developers, early adopters, and investors. However, it should be noted that TIA’s stock price performance over the past week has been horrific, with losses amounting to over 20%.
While the entire crypto market has had a rough start to the week, TIA’s poor performance was exacerbated by investors bracing for some of the new supply to be immediately sold off by recipients.
Celestia isn’t the only crypto project “celebrating” new supply in October. According to a post from Wu Blockchain, just over half a billion dollars worth of tokens are scheduled to be unlocked next week.
The biggest name to watch is Solana , which is set to release around 524,000 Sol over the next week.
While Solana is the largest project participating in the October token unlock, the unlock represents only 0.11% of the circulating supply of SOL and is unlikely to have a significant impact on the ecosystem.
The next biggest player is arguably Aptos, with its L1 scalable blockchain unlocking around $100 million worth of APT tokens in mid-October.
Other big names with notable token unlocks include Arbitrum, Axie Infinity, SUI, Cardano, ImmutableX, and Internet Computer.
