According to a press release from Tether, the Satoshi Nakamoto statue celebrates the mystery and innovation of the Bitcoin creator, while honoring his vision and legacy.

Tether Unveils Satoshi Nakamoto Statue in Lugano

The statue was designed by artist Valentina Picozzi in a way that plays with the observer’s perspective. It fades away as the observer changes position from the front or back, and completely depicts the man staring intently at his laptop when viewed from the side. The image symbolizes Nakamoto’s disappearance from public view after paving the way for a decentralized financial system.

“This work serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of Satoshi’s vision, inspiring us to continue to push the boundaries of innovation and financial freedom. We are honored to unveil this tribute to a visionary who changed the world of finance and empowered millions of people around the world,” said Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino.

Tether argued that the statue serves as a reminder that the principles of decentralization and financial sovereignty continue to thrive while Nakamoto’s identity remains hidden. It is located in front of Villa Ciani in Lugano.

Since Lugano launched the Plan ₿ initiative in collaboration with Tether two years ago, the city has made huge strides in Bitcoin adoption. The initiative allows residents to pay utility bills and taxes in Bitcoin (BTC), Tether (USDT), and Lugano’s own Swiss franc-pegged stablecoin (LVGA), recognizing these assets as legal tender.

In December 2023, Lugano went fully crypto-friendly, implementing technology that allows residents to pay their bills by scanning a QR code on their invoice via their preferred mobile wallet.

The city hosts the annual Plan ₿ forum, which brings together blockchain industry leaders, government officials, and Bitcoin enthusiasts to discuss the future of cryptocurrency and decentralized finance.
